Nikwax Product Contents

Born in 1954, Nick Brown was introduced to trekking in the Peaks with his father through the YHA from the age of ten. Nick traveled to Scotland every year and was unhappy with the existing waterproofing products so he created his own recipe to protect his boots.

It was important to make them waterproof without softening them and losing their essential supporting properties. Nick's wax (hence the name Nikwax) was the beginning of a remarkable success story.

Nikwax was first produced as a commercial product in North London. In 1977, at the age of 22, he started his first order by mixing together a tea vase, primus stove, jug and supplies purchased from a local hardware store.

What's in Nikwax and how does it work?

Nikwax developed and patented the TX.10i water repellent elastomer. The TX.10i elastomer was based on EVA, the same material found in flexible shoe soles. The patent also involved changing the molecular structure of mineral wax, which is typically brittle. This strengthens the molecule and makes it very elastic and flexible. This TX.10i polymer was the primary active ingredient in all Nikwax footwear and fabric processes.

Nikwax applications coat fabric and leather fibers with a network of elastic TX.10i water-repellent molecules. They stick to anything that isn't water repellent, but they keep the spaces between the fibers open and breathable. Nikwax applications can stretch and move with fabric and leather fibers. That's why Nikwax treatments can and do last through several washes, whereas competitors must reapply after each wash.
