The reason breathability depends on water repellency is this:

Breathable waterproof shoes are most likely to become wet and sweaty inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer nubuck or suede absorbs water, the shoe's breathability will be reduced. Therefore, to ensure comfort, your shoes must maintain their Durable Water Repellency (DWR). It will eventually wear out and need to be renewed with Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™.

Waterproof shoes need to be breathable.

When you're active and wearing shoes, your socks keep your feet dry by wicking moisture away from your feet. However, if your shoes absorb water and become wet, their breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapor cannot escape from the material, leaving your feet feeling damp and wet. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ adds Durable Water Repellency (DWR), which prevents water absorption, keeping your feet dry and comfortable while maintaining breathability.

Use Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ when your shoes are soaked in water.

Your shoes may be soaking in water simply because they're dirty. First, try cleaning them with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. If they're fairly new or recently waterproofed, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will revitalize just from cleaning. However, after the shoes have been thoroughly worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ after cleaning them with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.

Cleaning correctly is as important as waterproofing.

Using the right cleaning product is just as important as using the right waterproofing product. Conventional detergents leave a thin, water-absorbing film on the materials, masking their Durable Water Repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof shoes with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. Remember that dirt itself works against the DWR, so regular cleaning will improve performance.

How Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ protects

Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ is easy and quick to apply; spray or sponge it onto wet boots. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ provides an extremely Durable Water Repellency (DWR) that develops on air drying. It leaves a flexible water-repellent treatment on the individual fibers of the nubuck and suede. This allows moisture vapor to pass through, maintaining breathability and keeping your feet dry. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ is specifically designed and optimized for nubuck and suede combination shoes and will preserve the texture of the materials.

Apply Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ by hand.

Brush any dirt with a damp cloth and remove using Nikwax Shoe Cleaning Gel™.

Shake well before use. Protect the work surface.

Apply generously to wet shoes; spray from a distance of 5 cm or wipe with a sponge.

Carefully blot away any excess drips or runs and allow to dry naturally.

Note: Light/colored nubuck or suede may darken after treatment. Test on a hidden area first.

Always allow your shoes to dry naturally.

Leave your shoes to dry at room temperature.

Paper can be placed between the toes to absorb excess moisture; replace if wet.

Keep your shoes away from flames and radiators; drying them too quickly can crack the leather and cause bonded soles to peel.
