Wool base layers are designed to be worn close to the skin to provide comfort by maintaining body temperature and controlling moisture. They are highly absorbent (they spread moisture widely), fast-drying, and breathable. Therefore, it is important to maintain these qualities when caring for wool base layers.

To keep your base layers in top condition, they need to be properly cared for.

Base layers are great for regulating your body temperature and controlling moisture, but care should be taken when washing them to ensure they continue to function properly.

It's recommended to wash wool items with mild liquid detergents and avoid powders or biological detergents containing enzymes. Using conventional household detergents or fabric softeners can cause the fabric to retain moisture, impairing its wicking properties. This reduces wicking abilities and causes the fabric to dry slowly, reducing wearer comfort. Additionally, standard household fabric softeners and conditioners can cause pilling after several washes.

Wash your base layers after use.

After your base layer has been used several times, wash it with Nikwax Wool Wash™ to freshen, deodorize, soften, and improve drying and cooling. Always treat used wool base layers, socks, and travel clothes with Nikwax Wool Wash™ to keep them in top condition.

Conventional household detergents and fabric softeners reduce the performance of your base layers.

Using conventional household detergents and fabric softeners degrades the absorbency of base layers. Standard household detergents do not prevent odors from forming in the fabric during use. Conventional fabric softeners leave hydrophobic residues that reduce the fabric's performance, prevent moisture from wicking away, and prevent it from performing at its maximum potential.

Remove all non-washable items. Follow care label instructions. Do not use fabric softener. Do not use on waterproof garments.

Rinse thoroughly before use.

Place items in the washing machine.

For front-loading washing machines, use 1 full capful

(50 ml) of Nikwax Wool Wash™.

Wash according to the care label.

Wash the capful after use.

For top-loading machines in the US and Canada, use 100 ml for low water levels and 150 ml for medium water levels.

Nikwax Wool Wash™ can also be applied by hand.

To remove stubborn stains before washing, use pure Nikwax Wool Wash™.

Remove all non-washable items. Follow the care label instructions. Do not use fabric softener. Do not use on waterproof garments.

Rinse thoroughly before use.

Soak items in a sink or basin with hot water.

Use 25 ml of Nikwax Wool Wash™.

Rinse 3 times with clean water.

Let your garments air dry.

If the care label allows, air dry or machine dry on a low setting (machine drying may cause wool to shrink or shed).
